OLD SETTLER PASSES AWAY

With the death of J. C. Brooks passes one of the oldest
settlers of this county. Mr. Brooks came to the state from
Georgia at the age of three years and has made his home in
the Rock Church neighborhood since that time, being the
oldest settler in that part of the county. He was seventy-five
years of age and had been in poor health for several
years, but was in town last Saturday greeting his friends
as usual. He was taken suddenly ill and everything possible
was done to stay the hand of death but human skill was of
no avail. The deceased realized his condition and passed
on to the great beyond without a complaint, being sure death
was close at hand and knowing that he had lived his life of
usefulness. He united with the Baptist Church when a small
boy and those who knew him best, testify to the fact that he
was a true Christian character and showed this fact in his
every day life.
He died Tuesday morning at 11:40 and the funeral was
held Wednesday morning at Rock Church Cemetery, conducted
by Rev. Geo. W. Holloman, a brother-in-law of the deceased.
His wife died about ten years ago and since that time he and
his son, F.A. Brooks, have made their home together. The
surviving children are F.A., H.T., and James W. Brooks who
live in the same neighborhood, and Mrs. Ada Haggard of
Lampasas. Besides the children, he had a sister, Mrs.
Jim Martin of Snyder, who is 81 years of age and unable to
attend the funeral, and a brother near Alpine, who could not
be reached with the message of his death.

Goyen family records give his name as "Alan." This submitter has used "Allen," since that was the spelling used in the old records such as census, cemetery, deeds, and so forth. In other records, such as old deed records, his name is given as "Allan."

Evidence that Allen Brooks was a son of John Brooks and Elizabeth Toler is supported by the family information provided by John Brooks descendant Gina Goyen Paddock, through her grandmother and great-aunt, who list three older sons of John Brooks and his first wife: Alan (Allen?), McCager (Micager?), and John. Allen Brooks' published biographical sketch on the occasion of his 61st wedding anniversary also states he was a son of John Brooks and grandson of Micajah Brooks (see below).

Listed among the early land grant recipients of Denton County, Texas are: Allen Brooks, Micager Brooks, and John L. Brooks.

An Allen Brooks Esq. was the officiator at a wedding between Mary A. Sansing and B. (Benjamin) N. McClure in Denton County, Texas in 1856, at the home of "M. Brooks," witnessed by "M. Brooks" and "S. E. Brooks." Mary A. Sansing was a sister to Susan Elaine Sansing Brooks, wife of Micager Brooks
who went to California in 1858.

The 1870 Census of Lampasas County, Texas lists HH #20 farmer Allen Brooks, age 50, born Georgia with wife Elizabeth, age 47, born Georgia, son Josephus age 20 born Mississippi, Mary age 16 born Texas, James age 12 born Texas, and Donna age 7 born Texas. Next door resides William "Broks" age 32 born Georgia, with wife Nancy. Next door to William resided Ross Brooks, age 30, born Georgia. Next door to Ross resided Charles Witcher, age 26, born Georgia, with wife Mahala age 24 born Georgia. (Mahala was Mahala Rasbury, therefore a niece to Allen Brooks.)

Allen Brooks owned land in Lampasas County as did John C. Rasbury.

An article in "The Lampasas Leader" dated Friday October 28, 1898 describes Allen Brooks and wife Elizabeth Anne Pollard, on the occasion of their 61 years of marriage. It states: "Mr. Brooks comes of longlived ancestry, his father, John Brooks, dying at 90 odd, and his grandfather, Micajah Brooks, reached the remarkable age of 118 years." Copy of article in this submitter's possession. (Important note: Micajah Brooks' age at death was documented as 101, according to DAR records, and not 118.)

Allen Brooks is listed as Head of Household in the 1840 Census of Paulding County, Georgia.

Allen Brooks' obituary states that he was the father of 13 children, 8 of whom predeceased him.

The 1880 census of Lampasas County lists Allan Brooks age 63 with wife Betsey Brooks age 59 and a granddaughter, Betty Lee Morris, age 8. It is not known which of Allen Brooks' daughters was the mother of this child.

Elijah BROOKS133 was born about 1792 in NC.31,133 He died after 1830 at the age of 38 in Paulding Co., GA.31,133 [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE:Separated] Elijah Brooks lived in Henry County, Georgia in 1830.

A WorldConnect link states Elijah was buried at Felton County, Georgia and that he and Rachel Brewer married about 1814 at Tate, Pickens County, Georgia.

There is an Elijah Brooks (US Army Pvt.) buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, death date listed as January 17, 1865. Descendant Wandell Brooks believed this is the same Elijah Brooks. This researcher (Nancy Shire) does not think this is true.

The list of Elijah Brooks' children submitted to various sites by different researchers is confusing and varies from one researcher to another. Descendant Wandell Brooks gave the following list of children:

1. William A. Brooks
2. Grace Brooks
3. John A. Brooks
4. Francis Marion Brooks
5. James Pleasant Brooks
6. Frances Elizabeth Brooks

Researcher Teresa Faloon adds the following:

7. May Brooks
8. Nancy Brooks
9. Susan Brooks
10. Mary Brooks b. about 1820
11. Jane Brooks -- married Joseph Goddard ? (see 1880 census transcribed herein)
12. Janie Brooks b. 1859, married Joshah (Joshua?) Smith Pope
13. Mary M. Brooks b. 1864, married Francis William Pope

The last two were probably NOT children of Rachel Brewer and Elijah Brooks, as Rachel would have been way too old in 1859 and 1864 to bear children.

The 1880 census of Fish Creek, Polk County, Georgia has the following family:

Joseph B. Goddard, age 56, born GA
Jane Goddard, wife, age 57, born 57
Elijah Brooks, age 20, relationship not stated, born GA
Rachel Brooks, age 83, widow, relationship not stated, born GA

If this Rachel Brooks was Rachel Brewer Brooks, and if her age in the census is correct, she was born about 1797.

Elisha BROOKS31 was born on 27 May 1786 in Wilkes Co., GA.31 He died on 5 June 1878 at the age of 92 in GA.31 He was buried in Draketown, Haralson, GA.31
Information concerning the burial place for Elisha Brooks and Fanny Moseley comes from a descendant,
Fred A. Brock, 8228 Columbia Drive, Tyler, Texas 75703.

The part of Wilkes County where Elisha was born is now in Columbia County.

The family of Elisha and Frances Brooks was enumerated in the 1850 US Census of Paulding County, Georgia, as follows:

Elisha Brooks, age 64, born GA, Farmer
Frances Brooks, age 57, born GA
Mary Ann Brooks, age 21, born GA
Frances E. Brooks, age 19, born GA
Martha Brooks, age 17, born GA
John L. Brooks, age 14, born GA
Rebecca J. Brooks, age 13, born GA
Margaret H. Brooks, age 11, born GA
William H. Brooks, age 6, born GA

At least one researcher has confused the John L. Brooks age 14 above with John L. Brooks born in 1822 who married Jane Adair in 1841. Obviously they were first cousins with the same name, but Elisha's son
was much younger. It is not known what happened to the John L. Brooks son of Elisha in this census.

Ida Brooks Kellam stated that Elisha was married a second time, to a "Miss Moore." There is no evidence for this.

Isaac BROOKS31,133 was born about 1726 in York Co., SC.31,133 He died in 1825 at the age of 99 in Chatham Co., NC.31,133 Ida Brooks Kellam in "Brooks and Kindred Families" states that Isaac Brooks was "recorded as youngest son of John and Susan Brooks."

Isaac Brooks was deeded his father's home place in Chatham County, NC in March 1759.
He was a charter member of the Haw River Church with his wife Ruth Terrell Brooks and their daughter Mary.
During the Revolution he had a narrow escape from the Tories when they came to arrest him -- they chased him upstairs but he eventually escaped through a second story window.

Isaac Brooks was in the Battle of Alamance during the Revolution. He owned many acres of land, had many slaves, and was able to provide handsomely for his son Terrell Sr. in a deed dated 1792, Pittsboro, NC.

There is a transcription of his Will in the book "Brooks and Kindred Families" by Ida Brooks Kellam. It was made on 5 March 1815 and proved in May 1825.

He was a Planter and Assemblyman. Isaac Brooks and Ruth Terrell had the following children:

Mary Brooks
Anne Brooks
Phoebe Brooks
William Terrell Brooks
Nancy Brooks
Amelia "Milly" Brooks
Sarah "Sally" Brooks

James Micajah BROOKS31,32,1879,1880,1881 was born on 6 January 1827 in Cartersville, Bartow, GA.31,32 He died on 1 April 1907 at the age of 80 in Harrington, Lincoln, WA.31,32 Sources for this family:
Early Hopkins County deed records show that Allen and "Micajah" Brooks purchased land there in November 1850. (Book B, page 403, State of Texas, County of Hopkins, deed from William Barnes to Allen Brooks and Micajah Brooks, 22 November 1850.) These same two, Allen Brooks and "Micerjah" Brooks, sold land to John Brooks on 13 December 1852. This John Brooks was presumably their father, who arrived in Hopkins County at a later date. It is believed they were brothers, sons of John Brooks.
The name "Micager" was originally, and correctly, spelled "Micajah." Another variant spelling of the same name in Brooks family records is "McCager" which was the way the name was pronounced.

Other sources of information:
1. Vivian Cottey Soule, granddaughter of Cynthia Tennessee Brooks McCutchan.
2. B. Naydine Ziegler, granddaughter of Paulding or "Paul" Brooks, son of James Micager Brooks.
3. Deep Creek Cemetery records and tombstones, Tulare County, Calilfornia.
4. Hillcrest Cemetery records and tombstones at Harrington, Lincoln County, Washington.
5. 1860 and 1870 California US Census
6. Birth list from family Bible copied by Micager Brooks, Jr. Whereabouts of Bible unknown.
7. Stevens County, Washington Marriage Records 1886-1890.
8. Beck family records, showing a "Jim" Brooks who went to California. This is the only reference known to the nickname "Jim."
9. Correspondence with Flossie Brooks Luddington, granddaughter of Micager and Mahala Goodin Brooks, who lived in Ephrata, Washington in the mid 1970's.

Micajah Brooks was always called "Uncle Micager" or just "Uncle Cager." He first settled in Tulare County, California after leaving Texas. Later he moved to Lincoln County, Washington with his second wife, Mahala Goodin Starns, where he died and is buried. His grave is at Harrington, Washington.

Micager and Susan Sansing Brooks left Georgia after the birth of daughter Henrietta in 1851. They resided in Texas for a short time, probably Denton County, Texas, where Susan Sansing Brooks had family. Land records for Denton County show a Micager Brooks as a landowner. Daughter Cynthia was born in Texas in 1854, son Parker was born in Texas in 1857 (although he himself believed he was born in Georgia). In 1858 the family traveled by ox-team across the plains to California, first arriving in Porterville, then settling in the Exeter area. Micager was a stock grower and also raised sheep. (Ref: Tulare County Biographical sketch of Parker Rice Brooks)
Subject was listed as "Mikasa" Brooks with wife Susan and children Iverson, Mary, Robert, Cynthia, Parker, and Mancill in the 1860 census of Tulare County, California.

Some family records indicate that this family was from Cartersville, Georgia, which is in Bartow County, next to Paulding County. Cartersville is approximately 15 miles from Rockmart, Georgia where old Micajah
Brooks, Revolutionary War veteran, is buried.

Micajah Brooks descendant Wandell Brooks indicated that Uncle Micager was "James Micaiah" (which he pronounced "Micayah"). This is the first independent confirmation, besides the Beck family records, that indicate Uncle Micager's first name really was "James" or "Jim." However, Wandell Brooks did not provide any source for this information. Wandell Brooks is now deceased.
