Thomas was born in a crude log cabin in Spencer Co., just a few years after his parents had headed West with their two daughters. They probably came through Logan, KY and Nashville ,TN (Morton 8/2, 43). They came to Spencer Co 1810-13.
The Francis Morton family, along with the Thomas Lincolns and the Kelleys were member of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church in Vermillion Co. At that time it was just a log structure (Monroe Times).
Francis Morgan, a millwright and farmer, owned land where the Vermillion Co Bank in Potomac stands (Monroe Times). According to his d-i-l, Angeline A. Morton: "Thomas Morton was a boyhood friend of Abraham Lincoln's; they split rails together and traveled to New Orleans with a raft-load of local products; they often slept together, and it was not an uncommon experience to shake the snow off their bedclothes before crawling out of them on an Indiana winter morning as they slept in the attic of the log cabin under a shake roof." The two families lived within 10 miles of each other, so the boys almost certainly knew each
other. They both attended the Pigeon Creek Baptist church. Both families sold out in 1830 and moved to IL. There is no record of Thomas Morton in any of Abe Lincoln's biographical materials (Morton 8/2, 43).
When Thomas was abt 15 the family sold out and headed north along the banks of the Wabash River until they reached the mouth of the Vermillion River near Newport IN. The 1830 Federal Census lists them in Vermillion Co IN. They remained there until his father's death in 1839 (Morton 8/ 2, 43-5). Francis had started to make arrangements for the move, but died before they were completed. The family first rented a farm in Clarno before buying a 300 acre farm in Mt. Pleasant Twp., close to Hammerly Creek (Monroe Times).
"Mr. Morton was m. 1 in 1835 to Miss Susan Kelly who died in 1845 at the age of 30" (History of Buchanen Co IA). (Age may have been correct but 1845 is wrong as Thomas Morton m. Frances A. Brown in 1844.) 1836-- "In 1836 Thomas Morton homesteaded in Middlefork Twp near Absalom and Joe Kelly; John S. and James Bailey; Asa Brown and the Partlow brothers " (Volkel 1967)
1839-- aft his father's death Thomas, Susan and two baby boys migrated to Green Co with his mother and three younger brothers. "During the spring and summer months of 1839 Mrs. Francis Morton and members of her family came to Green Co WI by wagon and team, driving their stock with them (Bingham, 1877).
1840-- listed as head of household in 1840 WI Census, Green Co. Listed after Joseph KELLEY. A bill of sale bearing the signatures of Thomas and four of his older siblings dated 28 Nov 1840 is recorded at the Office of the Register of Deeds, Vermillion Co IL (brothers L.W.P, W.W. and J.F were minors). Morton states Ruth provided the money to buy this land, and that Asa Brown built the outbuildings on the farms that Thomas and Lewis W.P. later farmed (Morton 8/2, 45).
c.1865 Thomas sells his farm in Green Co and heads out to Iowa with this sons. "He came to IA in the spring of 1867, locating in 'old Hazelton' where they made their home for about five years engaging in the hotel business. He purchased a farm of 80 acres, where he now resides, in the east edge of Hazleton station in the year 1872. He has put up fine improvements, both in buildings and shade and fruit tress, besides putting his farm in a fine state of cultivation. When the railroad came to town he laid off forty acres in town lots. Mr. and Mrs. Morton are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and politically Mr. Morton is a greenbacker" (History of Buchanen Co Iowa, 343)
1880-- Buchanan Co Census C.K. Morton lists IND as bp of both parents. Green Co census 1850 gives identical ages for Mordecai and Joseph b.i. Ohio (were they twins?) He died of a stroke at his homestead in Buchanen Co IA. He and his wife are buried side by side in the Hazelton IA cemetery (Morton 8/2, 42)
