The 1814 marriage of John Brooks and Elizabeth "Tolar" occurred in the same place and in the same time frame as the marriages of some of John Brooks' brothers and sisters. (Putnam County, Georgia) According to researcher and descendant Charleyne Brooks, Elizabeth Tolar Brooks' death is recorded in the "Christian Index Obituaries 1822-1848," page 28, published/maintained by the Georgia Baptist Historical Society. She died at the age of 54 in Paulding County; the death was recorded on October 26, 1848, page 343, Column 1. There are a number of candidates for the father of Elizabeth Tolar, but nothing can be proven or pinned down in any way. For example: It is known that one Dempsey Toler/Tolar served with Micajah Brooks in the Revolutionary War (source: Micajah's pension application.) There is at least one other Dempsey Toler who was in Upson County, Georgia -- he died there before 1850 -- who was married to Mary Carter. There is a Dempsey Toler who married Susannah May on 3 May 1820 in Warren County, Georgia. It is likely that the Dempsey Toler in Upson County was either a son or nephew of the original Dempsey Toler. It is known that one Dempsey Toler/Tolar was in Wilkes County, Georgia by 1790 or 1791 and that he received various land grants in Georgia for his Revolutionary War service. He lived in Jones County at least part of the time and was granted land in Lee County for his Revolutionary War service in 1827. Also in Wilkes County, Georgia, Demsey Toler (sic) was listed as security for the estate of James May (wife Lydia May) on 14 December 1789. Perhaps he was a son-in-law. Names mentioned in this document (from "The Early Records of Georgia, Vol. II, Willkes County" abstracted by Grace Gillam Davidson and published 1933 at Macon, GA) include: James May, Lydia May (whose maiden name was either Hill or Bishop), Demsey Toler, Jos. Davidson (who was James May's son-in-law, married to Fanny Winifred May). It is known that James May also had daughters named Dorcas and Lydia. Perhaps Susannah, who later married Dempsey Toler, was also a daughter. It is known that one Lewis Toler/Tolar was in Putnam County, Georgia by 1813 (listed on the tax list) and that this same Lewis Toler, while living in Henry County in 1827, received at least one land grant in Lee County, Georgia for his Revolutionary War service. He served in the War of 1812, Captain Irwin's Company. Lewis Tolar was also in Washington County, Georgia for the 1790 census (reconstructed), 1793 muster rolls, The early records of Georgia show that persons named Henry, Thomas, and William Toler were issued passports by the Governor of Georgia during the period 1785-1820.
