1839. On 25 Feb, Absolom Kelly was appointed to serve as a petit juror at the next term of the District Court, Territory of Wisconsin. On 2 Apr, he was again appointed. His brother, Mordecai, was appointed to the grand jury. (History of Green Co WI, 449-50).

1847. Estate probated in March (see u.a. Vol 14 p. 543 Green Co., Probate Records)

At the time of his death he owned 160 acres of land in the Territory of Wisconsin, and evidently some property in Illinois, as the adminsitrator entered a bill for traveling there. It is not known where Absolum is buried, as a tombstone for him has not been found. It is assumed it is likely in the vicinity of the Kelly cemetery. (Morton, 34) Estate record on file in Green Co., WI courthouse.

Absolom Monroe Kelley was born on his parent's farm in Monroe WI, and was supposedly the first white child born in the town (see "Kelly Stone Residence will be 100 Wednesday," Monroe Times 25 Aug 1951). At that time WI had only recently been organized as a territory. He had little formal education growing up on the farm, since schools were conducted only on the subscription plan when he was a boy (A.M. Kelly obit). Lafayette Co. history states he was the second white child born in Green Co. The first was C.R. Dennison of Cadiz.
In 1861 or 1863 Absalom and his brother, Samuel, and Cornelius Morton went across the plains to Sacramento in search of gold. They traveled by wagon through Council Bluffs and over the North Platte route. There were twelve wagons, twenty-two men and two women in the company headed west. He remained in California over a year, possibly as long as 18 months. He returned by way of Panama and New York City (Morton, 60; Annals of IA, 8 3).
The Kelley family moved to Hancock Co IA some time before 1896. The 1896 plate of the county lists Absalom Kelley in Twp 95 N, R 23 W. He bought a couple of farms before actually moving out to Ell Twp, where he eventually developed a 500 acre farm. The family resided in Garner most of the time, and Ab drove out to the farm daily (Annals of Iowa). According to the 1896 plat map of Ell Twp, Absalom Kelly owns three farms. Peter Gilbert's 160 acre farm is just up the road. The one farm is quite small, while the other two are 120 and 320 acres respectively. By 1914 Peter Gilbert had sold his original farm, taken over and tripled the size of Absalom's smaller farm. Ida A. Lawhorn and her husband Joseph Lawhorn are both listed on the plate map as owning 80 acres each of the largest farm, with Absalom retaining 160 acres. The farms were still in the family at his death (A.M. Kelly obit)
Absalom was initiated into the Masonic Lodge at Winslow, Illinois, on September 11, 1875, raised to Master Mason Nov. 6, 1875 and has taken alll of the degrees to and including the Shrine. He was a Knight Templar and a Noble of Za-ga-zig Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Des Moines. He may have been a member as early as 1874. He belonged to the Bethel lodge in Garner, and advanced to second section of Master Mason degree. He was a
Mason in good standing fifty-four years. In 1925 he celebrated the 50th anniversary of membership (Morton, 60; Annals of Iowa, 83; obit.).
He was a democrat, and served several terms as J.P. in WI. "In religion Liberal; has been School Director, Pathmaster, Assessor, J.P. and one of Town Board; has some very fine Durham stock." (Lafayette Co History) He was also as county assessor and supervisor, and served on the board of directors for the Congregational Church (prob. in Garner). In addition he was a member of the Garner City Council 1914-16. He was a stockholder and director of the Farmers State Bank of Garner. When the bank became the Farmers National Bank he retained his stock and continued as a member of the board of directors. He was a stockholder in several Hancock county banks (Annals of Iowa, 83).
Every Thanksgiving there was a family reunion hosted by Ab Kelley, at least as long he was alive. For many years there was an annual reunion of the Mortons and Kelleys at the old homestead in Green Co on the third Sunday in June. The 1927 reunion was attended by 600 family members (Annals of Iowa, 83).
Absalom lived to be 96 years old, quite an accomplishment even in his long lived family, when he fell victim to the complications of old age. At the time of his death he was the second oldest inhabitant of Garner. He was a greatly respected member of the Garner community. "Dad" Kelly's word was good - he never broke a promise or violated a trust." He died at his home "in the east part of town shortly after the midnight hour, Tuesday August 6, at the advanced age of 96 years. For the past two years Mr. Kelly has been confined to his home the greater part of the time, but not until the day before his death did his condition become alarming." Funeral services were held Friday afternoon (9 Aug 1935). There was a short service at Shannon-Bohn Funeral home at 2 pm., followed by one at the Congregational church at 2:30. Dr. W. Dibble, Mason City was in charge (A.M. Kelly obit). Absalom and Martha are both buried on the Kelley family plot in Concord Cemetery. It is located in the front section halfway between the main entrance road and the west access road. Directly in front of them is the Lawhorn/Grell plot (dau. Ida married Joseph Lawhorn, see Kelley data)

Born in her pioneer parents log cabin near Perrysville, about six months before they were married - if the records are correct. She was about 7 when the family (and her uncles) left the homestead in 1835 or 6 to travel by covered wagon and ox-team to Monroe WI.
Almost 19 when she married "Alec" Morton. He promptly took off for CA in 1850. He returned on Christmas night in 1851 with a pocket full of "dust" (about $3,000 worth). His absence did not seem to hamper the birthrate of that family! Sarah's parentage is in question. Lends credence to the "Blue-blooded Englishman tale," which had ciruculated in the family for many years (this version from Fred Eberhardt): "It seems this character had been on a buffalo-hunting safari, and was on his way back to the east coast. He had his own coach, wagons, etc., when he stopped at Mordecai's house to rest up. He said he was an "Earl" - what of I never heard her (his mother, Etta Mae Divan Eberhardt, who lived w ith Alex and Amy from 1890 to 1912) say. He had beautiful manners, could recite poetry by the yard, and knew many of the Biblical Psalms. He made a great hit with the ladies in the neighborhood. When I first heard the story in the 1930's, I pictured him as a short, pot-bellied man, complete with pith helmet, walrus mustache and monacle. I could have been wrong. He probably looked more like Ronald Coleman! Anyway he went ape over Amy - wanted her to divorce Alex, marry him, and go back to England. He got so obnoxious old Mordecai went to see Ashford Trickel (a Justice of the Peace); had some papers made out, and "Uncle Jack Trickle" went to Monroe and got the sheriff. If Amy was pregnant, I'll bet the "Earl" got the worst arm-twisting he ever had - moneywise. However, in telling the story my mother never breathed a word of any 'irregularity.'" (Morton, 44)
1915 res 418 N. Jackson St. Even at the age of 86 she was still very active. She mowed her own lawn and gardened. She still kept house, shoveled snow. She enjoyed reading and quilting (Monroe Times). She lived to the ripe old age of 92.
