This was a private 'General Family Newsletter' done by Markham and Frances (Squires) Morton ending abt 1974...
It was financed through contributions from all Morton descendants who were interested in getting it. I rcd 2 issues:
Vol 6, #1 Jan 1973, and Vol 6 #3 Dec 1973. It then ceased arriving.
In the newsletter was information about any Morton's (and descendants) who wished to supply said information.
Generally it was about family 'history', ie: births, deaths etc. The writers were always trying to find out the history of the ancestors of each Morton---The writers apparently toured the US looking for and interviewing all Morton's they could locate.

Susannah / Susan b. 1811 or 12? IN or OH? In Scioto Co (is now Pike Co)
which brother moved from Highland Township Vermillion Co IN to Green Co?
As one of James' younger children, Susannah is possibly of the mysterious
"Susan" (Mordecai's mother as listed on 2nd marr. license). According to
family tradition, James was married to a full-blooded Miami Indian. Rose
and Susan may be the same person, but unlikely either of them were Indian.
Susannah married Thomas Morton, son of Francis and Ruth (Powell) Morton,
1 Jan 1835 in Vermillion Co (prob. Danville) by James Partlow, J.P.
1836: "In 1836 Thomas Morton homesteaded in Middlefork Twp near Absalom
and Joe Kelly; John S. and James Bailey; Asa Brown and the Partlow
brothers" (Volkel 1967). James (?) Morton settled there around 1834 (is
he the father of James and Alex?). Absolum and Joseph Kelley had come to
the area abt 1829). James and John S. Bailey arrived in 1836 and 1834
respectively. James married Susannah's sister, Nancy Kelly. They were
married in 1834 in Vermillion Co, so the dates of arrival are not
accurate. Asa Brown and the Partlow brothers arrived in 1830. Thomas
later married Asa's daughter, Francis. Her mother was a Partlow. All of
these families would later migrate to Green Co WI" (French et al 1948:30)
1839: "Susan's brother Mordecai had moved from Vermillion Co., IN to Green
Co. near Monroe, WI in 1835 in a prairie schooner hauled by two yoke oxen,
where he homesteaded a quarter section obtained from the U.S. Land Office
at $1.25 per acre. His letters were so enthusiastic about the new country
that Thomas and Susan left Danville early in 1839 with their two baby boys
and took up a homestead near Monroe, then in the Territory of Wisconsin
where Susan was to live for three more years before her untimely death in
1842" (Morton, 69) Thomas' newly widowed mother, Ruth, as well as his
three younger brothers accompanied them.
1840: Thomas Morton listed as head of household in 1840 WI Census, Green
Co.
From Thomas Morton's obit: "Susan died following the birth of twins
Cordelia and Cornelius on 14 Feb 1842 and was buried on one corner of the
farm due to the heaviest snowfall in the history of that area" (Morton
8/2, 45). It is unclear if she is buried on her own farm or that of her
brother, Mordecai (now the Kelley-Franklin Cemetery).
No marker or record has been found "although Thomas' second wife has a
fine granite monument in the Hazelton, IA cemetery!" Their farm was very
near where the Franklin-Kelly cemetery is today. Supposedly the first
person buried there was an Indian (Susan or her mother?). "It has been
rumored that brother Mordecai had her body moved to the Kelly Cemetery
near Monroe - but nobody to date has found her grave. We do not know just
where she was born in Indiana, but just prior to her marriage we believe
she was living with her beloved older brother in Vermillion Co (Morton
7/1).
Her heirs inherited part of Absolom Kelley's estate. Thomas Morton
disposed of the property 31 May 1856. "Thomas Morton, Guardian of
Columbus, William, Charles, Cornelius and Cordelia, infant heirs of the
estate of Susannah Morton, deceased, was empowered by the Court to make
sale of minors' interest in real estate described -- 16 acres in NW corner
of E1/2 of NE1/4 section 35 in Twp 2 N of Jordan Twp R6E. It was sold at
public auction at the door of the Court House, Monroe to George Michael ,
highest bidder for $150" (Vol 14 p. 543 Green Co Probate Records).
