Respected Uncle, with pleasure, I avail myself to let you know that we are as well at present ever hoping these few lines may find you and family enjoying the same good blessing of health. I have not heard from you but one time since you left here and become almost impatient to hear. I have written several letters to you, but have never received any answers yet. Am very anxious to hear how you all did get through the War and to know whether any of your family was in the service or not. I will say to y ou that I have lost two brothers in the rebellion.
Henry M. Barnwell fell in the battle of Seven Pines on the 3lst of May, 1862. John G. Barnwell died the 6th of June, 1862, in camp near Richmond , Virginia, with typhoid fever. James H. Hall entered the service in the Spring of 1861 and came home in the summer of 1864 and died with breast complaint. Uncle James Barnwell died in the Spring of 1865 with fever. Aunt Susan Barnwell is still living at the old place yet. Mother Barnwell and Mother Harvey are still living though almost worn out with trouble. The past four years have been some of sorry trouble to us all. Everything is scarce here, nearly everything to exist on was taken to the army which left the country in bad condition. Robert S. Barnwell and family are all well and Shelby Barnwell and family. Shelby lost his son in the War. There was no one escaped this rebellion. They all had to take part or go to the woods and a man could not stay there with safety toward the last for the army was all over the country. R.W. McClullough and family and W.S. Browning and family are all well. I was able to keep out of the army all the time myself by being a State Officer. I had to sell Uncle James Barnwell's perishable property for Confederate money and had some of it on hand when the surrender was that I could not get pay out. The estate was in debt about as much as that what I sold will pa y. There may be a few hundred dollars over what will pay the debts, that I can't tell. The land is unsold yet. Aunt Susan Barnwell is still living on it, there are three hundred acres in tract. I want to know what to do with it, sell or divide. Think it would be best to divide, for if it is sold she will have no home at all. You and Uncle Robert can consult each other, if living, and do what you think is best about it. I shall bring my short letter to a close by asking you to write soon. Nothing more at present. I remain your affectionate nephew until death.
