So she, herself, went to the Union Colonel and asked for her horse. He asked if she was a Union sympathizer and she told him that she was always raised to honor the United States of America. The colonel ordered the mare returned to her. Her husband had enlisted with the Confederacy. After Harvey Farris dies in 1913, America goes to live with her daughter, Frances Terry Powell, and her family. She lived in Springdale, Washington Co., AR. The Powells move to Tehlequah, OK abt 1916 and America went with them. She died in 1917 and is buried in the Powell plot in Tehlequah, OK.
