John arrived in Philadelphia on October 22, 1682 on the ship "Lamb" as part of William Penn's Fleet with his mother, the widow, Ellen Stackhouse Cowgill and his siblings, Ralph, Edmund, Jane and Jennet. The Lamb departed from Liverpool, England on June 26, 1682.

His first wife was Bridget Croasdale (1671-1701), daughter of Thomas & Agnes (Hawthornthwaite) Croasdale. The Croasdales also came on the ship the Lamb with the Cowgill family and many others under the same Certificate of Removal from Settle Monthly Meeting in England dated 4mo (June) 7, 1682. John & Bridget married 8mo (Oct) 19, 1693 at Middletown MM and had at least 4 children before her death, just 4 months after their daughter Ellin was born. I will be happy to send you a copy of their marriage certificate and Certificate of Removal from England if you are interested. On 20 Feb 1699 he purchased of his brothers-in-law (Wm & John Croasdale) 197 acres, part of a larger tract laid out to their father Thomas Croasdale, and after his decease, patented by the Commissioners of Property, June 28, 1692, to his heirs. This tract was located in Middletown township, Bucks county, fronting on Neshaminy creek, and appears on Holme's map in the name of "Widow Croasdal." In 1818 he was elected County Commissioner and served for 2 years. He was a Grand juror in 1819. He taught school in 1820. "The Jericho Friends Book..." Page 12

"The Jericho Friends Meeting 1818 to 1830 Benjamin Cox did not live at any time in the Jericho neighborhood. His life-long residence was near the White River Friends Meeting. However, he was prominent in the Jericho Friends Meeting through the fact that he often preached there. He owned a quarter section of land within a mile of the Meeting-house. Further, his son William B. married Margaret Peacock (daughter of Abram Peacock) and lived on this land as well as exhorted at Jericho for a number of years. Despite the great number of Coxes in the early neighborhood, it seems that all who remain today are descended from this same Benjamin Cox, who never lived there. He is therefore worthy of inclusion in this book. Benjamin Cox was born in North Carolina in 1785 and moved to Randolph County with his parents, John and Patience (Piggott) Cox, in 1817. He married Ann Rhoads in North Carolina. They had eight children, two of whom married Jericho folks. Benjamin Cox taught in the early schools of White River about 1820, was a recorded minister of the Friends, was one of the first three Commissioners of Randolph County, and helped to lay out the town of Winchester, as County Seat. He died in 1847 and is buried at the White River burying ground.
