Joab BROOKS31,133 was born about 1712 in NC.31,133 He died before 14 November 1775 at the age of 63 in Chatham Co., NC.31 Joab Brooks settled in Chatham County with his brother Mark, on the headwaters of Ephraim's Creek, about 2 miles northwest of Ore Hill. He is thought by some researchers to have been born in England. Among the highlights of his life, he was: - granted land in Bladen County, North Carolina in 1756 and 1757. (Later Cumberland County.) - living in Orange County in October 1758 when he sold land to William Lomax. - was Magistrate of Orange County 1757, member of governing body 1758 - refused to qualify as a member of the Court in 1761, "probably because of his Regulator sympathies" (see Kellam, "Brooks and Kindred Families") - by 1769-70 the courts were almost entirely made up of Regulators, and by then he was again serving in the Court - was appointed Judge of the County Court of Pleas and Quarter Session 1774

On 14 November 1775 Joab Brooks' Will was proved in Court by Thomas and Isaac Brooks, his Executors, and the estate ordered sold. The Will itself has not been found.

Joab BROOKS31 was born about 1753 in NC.31 He died in 1804 at the age of 51 in Warren Co., GA.31 Joab Brooks was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He lived inWarren County, Georgia where in 1784 he was granted 250 acres of land for Revolutionary War service. In 1789 he bought land in Wilkes County, Georgia on Rocky Comfort Creek, which later became Warren County.

Joab Brooks left a Will dated 19 March 1804, proved in September of that same year.

Joab and Catherine Campbell Brooks are said to have had the following known children:

1. Mary "Polly" Brooks, born after 1783, married to a Mr. Kitchner
2. John Brooks, born 28 Feb 1786, married 16 Feb 1808 to Nancy Nunn in Warren County, GA. He lived in Wilkerson County, GA.
3. Micajah Brooks, born about 1787, married Charity Pool. Lived in Noxubee County, Mississippi (1850 census) with wife "Caty," age 64. Was this Charity Pool?
4. Allen Brooks, born 14 July 1793, married Narcissa (or Narcissus) Carter 11 Feb 1817 in Warren County,
GA, died 19 Oct 1866. He lived in Lowndes County, Mississippi.
5. Jane Brooks, born about 1797, married Vincent Pratt 18 Dec 1817 in Warren County, GA.
6. Elizabeth Brooks -- sometimes called "Sara Elizabeth" -- born about 1792, married Leonard Pratt 14 Feb 1809.
7. Terrell Brooks, born about 1798, married first Elizabeth Travis on 23 Dec 1819 in Warren County, GA; married second to Margaret "Peggy" ?, lived in Lowndes County, Mississippi.
8. Martin Brooks, born after 1798, died 1834 in Muscogee, GA. May have lived in Tennessee.
9. William Brooks, or William Charles Brooks, born about 1802 in Georgia, married Phoebe Hill on 9 Jan 1828 in Warren County, GA. Moved to Pike County, Alabama.

The Allen Brooks family (#4 above) lived near Crawford, MS near Lowndes and Noxubee Counties. Allen died 2 Oct 1866 and was buried next to his wife "Narcissus" in the Brooks/Henkel Cemetery 2 miles east of Crawford, MS. He had at least four children and probably more: Mary, John M., Margaret A., Georgiana. (1850 census Lowndes County, MS)

Terrell Brooks also lived in Lowndes County and had at least six children, probably more: John, Mary A., Harriet, James, Margaret, and Kate. (1850 and 1860 censuses of Lowndes County, MS)

Micajah Brooks (#3 above) died in 1851. He had at least five children: Micajah Madison Brooks, Thomas Brooks, William C. Brooks, Matthew Brooks, and Jane C. Brooks.

At the time of the 1850 census Allen Brooks was one of the largest slave owners in that part of Mississippi, owning 81 slaves. He and his brothers "McCager" and "Teral" came to Mississippi about 1830 from Warren
County, Georgia. Micajah's son Thomas was also listed as a "Planter," as was his son Micajah Madison Brooks. I don't know what happened to Thomas, but Micajah Madison Brooks (he was called "Madison") moved to Forney, Kaufman County, Texas with his wife Nancy Barry and several of their children about
1876. Micajah Madison and Nancy Barry Brooks were buried at Hillcrest Cemetery, Forney, Kaufman County, Texas. Nancy died in 1878 and he lived on until 5 September 1905.

John BROOKS Sr31,133 was born about 1683 in VA.31 He died about 1766 at the age of 83 in Chatham Co., NC.31 John Brooks Esq. Also known as John Brooks, Sr.

According to the genealogy written by Joseph Headen in 1869, a John Brooks first went from England to the West Indies, then on to Virginia, with five other brothers. "...three of them went North, the other three came South." There seems to be no way to prove whether or not this John Brooks was the same as the John Brooks Esq. believed to be the progenitor of this family line.

Most researchers now believe that John Brooks Esq. was born in Virginia.

Tradition says John Brooks Esq. came to Virginia from England with his wife, Susan, and six sons, lived there a short time, then moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina about 1735.

John Brooks was first granted land in Bladen County, NC which later became Cumberland County. (1735) This may have been in the old Cross Creek area, now Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was Justice of the Peace from 1743-1751 and ran a mill. In 1754 his plantation fell into newly created Cumberland County, where he was appointed Vestryman for the St. David Parish.

A John Brooks received a 640-acre grant of land in Tick Creek (now in Chatham County) in 1755. He is thought to have brought his family by canoe as far up the Cape Fear River as was possible, to settle in an area which later became Orange County, then Chatham County.

John Brooks moved to Orange County, North Carolina (to a part which is now Chatham County) in 1756. He built a 2-story house, framed and weatherboarded with glass windows and paneled doors and a gambrel roof. It was located 3 miles east of Ore Hill and was later deeded to his son Isaac Brooks. It stood until 1940. There is currently an effort among various descendants to reconstruct the old house. (2007)

John Brooks was a vestryman, Justice of the Peace, planter, and miller. He was of the "sect of decenters known as Baptist."

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' Ancestral File site has posted the family of Christopher BROOKS b. 1665 Surrey, England and wife Ann SHAKSPEAR b. 1668 England listing the following children: George (1688-1750), John (1690-1691), John (1692-?), Samuel (1694-?), Francis
(1696-?), perhaps others. These children were all listed as being in Jamaica. Some researchers connect the second "John" listed with John BROOKS Esq., subject of this family group. This seems unlikely.

As previously stated, many believe that John Brooks born in 1690 or thereabouts was most probably born in Virginia. There are records of persons named John Brooks (the name is also spelled Brookes, Brooke, Brook) living in Virginia much earlier than the 1735 date traditionally assigned to John's arrival in the Americas.

Spouse: Susan UNKN. Susan UNKN and John BROOKS Sr were married about 1708 in VA.31 Children were: Thomas BROOKS, Joab BROOKS, John BROOKS Jr, Mark BROOKS Sr, James BROOKS, Isaac BROOKS, Martha BROOKS.

John BROOKS Jr31,133 was born about 1715 in Bladen Co., NC.31,133 He died before 1780 at the age of 65 in Wilkes Co., GA.31 John Brooks' birth and death dates are unknown; dates given are only guesses based on various clues in the old records. Some sources state he was born in England, but that is improbable given that some researchers now believe his father, also named John, was born in Virginia.

One source from the LDS library states that this John Brooks was born in Virginia and came to North Carolina in 1736, settling near what is now Fayetteville. The source quoted was "Knight's History of Georgia."

A John Brooks apparently resided in Craven County, NC on 9 Sep 1740 where he was listed as a member of "a Sect of decenting people called Baptist...John Brooks (and others) came into court and subscribed the test, the 39 articles of religion being read to them." (Source: "Brooks and Kindred Families, by Ida Brooks Kellam -- also the following notes). Not sure if this is John Brooks Sr. or Jr.

When one John Brooks sold the land in Craven County in 1747 his wife was listed as "Catherine." Either this is not the same John Brooks or he had an earlier wife, before Jane May.

John Brooks was granted 200 acres of land in Craven County, NC in 1746. He was deeded 640 acres in November 1760 by the Earl of Granville. He was listed in 1771 as a planter of Chatham County, North Carolina. He was a member of Orange County Regulators in 1771 along with his brothers Isaac and James.

John Brooks moved to Georgia about 1775 to land that became Wilkes County, Georgia in 1784. (Indian land.) However, some researchers believe that John died in North Carolina and that his widow Jane moved to Georgia with her family after 1779.

Jane May Brooks was listed as a widow in the 1793 tax list of Wilkes County, Georgia. She was living on Briar Creek then.

There are various dates given for John Brooks' death: 1767, 1768, 1767, 1775, 1779, even as late as 1811. If he is the same John Brooks who moved to Georgia about 1775, then his death date is most likely somewhere between 1775 and 1780. One source gives his death date as "after 1768 but before 1780." The 1811 date is given on the LDS site "Ancestral File," source unknown.

There does not seem to be a definitive list of all the names of the children of John and Jane May Brooks. Many sources list a daughter, Susannah, who married James Kelly. However, the dates for Susannah's birth vary wildly -- from the 1750's to June 21, 1792. It seems more likely that she was a granddaughter.

John BROOKS31,1460,1873,1884 was born about 1790 in GA.31,1460,1873 He died in March 1879 at the age of 89 in Johnson Co., TX.31,1460 He was buried in Laramore Cemetery, Cleburne, Johnson, TX.31 Micajah Brooks descendant (through Micajah's son Elijah) Wandell Brooks stated that John's middle initial was "D." He did not know what this initial might stand for nor did he cite any source for it.

Some information was obtained from copies of family records of descendants of Eliza Brooks Beck and Mary Elizabeth Brooks Crisp.

There may have been another daughter, Rhoda Belle Brooks, who married Mastin Kearley. There is no proof of a connection, but she could have been one of othe "2 females age 10-15" in the 1830 census listing of Carroll County, Georgia.

The 1830 census of Carroll County, Georgia has the following family:

John Brooks, Head of Household
1 male age 40-50 (John Brooks? Would have been 40 in 1830)
1 female age 30-40 (Elizabeth Tolar Brooks?)

1 male age 10-15 (Allen Brooks? Would have been 12 in 1830)
2 females age 10-15 (Delaney Brooks? Under 15 in 1830. Rhoda Belle Brooks? Age 10 in 1830)
1 male age 5-10 (John L. Brooks? Age 8 in 1830)
1 male under 5 (Micajah "Micager" Brooks? Age 3 in 1830)
1 female under 5 (Nancy Brooks? Under 1 year old in 1830)

It is likely that John Brooks moved to Texas in 1852. If so, then he arrived after his son, John L. Brooks, who was in Texas by 1851. The book, "Brooks and Kindred Families," by Ida Brooks Kellam, indicates that John Brooks was living in Haralson County, Georgia in 1851. Haralson County was not created until 1856, from Carroll and Polk Counties, so he was probably in Polk County (a part of which was Paulding County before Polk was created in 1851). Therefore, John Brooks didn't move -- the county boundaries did. He was in the 1850 census of Paulding County, Georgia, with his family listed as follows:

Household #538 - Census taken October 5, 1850

John Brooks, age 60, real estate value $3,000, born in Georgia
Eliza Brooks, age 41, born Tennessee
Elizabeth Brooks, age 18, born Georgia
Eliza Brooks, age 14, female, born Georgia
Rebecca Brooks, age 12, female, born Georgia
James T. Brooks, age 8/12, born Georgia

Eliza Brooks age 41 in this census was the second wife of John Brooks, Eliza McFarland. Her age suggests that she may have been a widow when she married John.

Early Hopkins County, Texas land records show that John Brooks was sold 320 acres by Allen and Micajah Brooks in December 1852. He sold the same land to his son-in-law Carroll Crisp a year later, in November 1853, and at the same time purchased land in Upshur County, adjacent to Hopkins County.

The Connally family records, as narrated by Jeanette Darby Connally, wife of a descendant of Elizabeth Brooks Crisp, indicate that John and Elizabeth "Toller" Brooks settled on a place ten miles north of Sulphur Springs on 7 November 1852. Elizabeth "Toler" or "Toller" died in 1848. Therefore, the "Elizabeth Brooks" who came to Upshur County with her husband was most likely Elizabeth (or "Eliza") McFarland.

John Brooks' grave is in the Laramore Cemetery located between Cleburne and Alvarado, Texas. His marker reads: "John Brooks, Pvt. Adams Co. Floyds Div. War of 1812. Died March 1879." His wife, Eliza (McFarland) Brooks, was laid to rest beside him.

The grave markers of John and Eliza Brooks in the Laramore Cemetery are listed in a compilation of records of Johnson County cemeteries taken in 1969. The book, which is very worn and in bad shape, is located in the Johnson County Museum in Cleburne, Texas.

War of 1812 records indicate that John Brooks enlisted on 12 September 1813 and was discharged on 6 March 1814. He lived in Paulding County, Georgia in 1851. He lived in Upshur County, Texas in 1855. In 1872 he lived in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas, where he died in 1879.

Other notes: A John and Elizabeth Brooks were members of the Carroll County, Georgia New Hope Primitive Baptist Church 1828-1845. It is not clear whether or not they were the same persons in this database.

John Hanna Brooks also served in the War of 1812, 7th Georgia Militia.

1. Philip Hanna Brooks, born 1772-1773, died 1842 in Jones County, GA.

John L. BROOKS31,32,33 was born on 10 October 1822 in Van Wert, Paulding, GA.31 He died on 12 April 1903 at the age of 80 in Somersdet, Bexar, TX.31 He was buried in Old Rock Cemetery, Somerset, Bexar, TX.31 The alleged town of John L. Brooks' birth, Van Wert, is in eastern Polk County, Georgia. At one time it was the county seat for Polk County. It is near Rockmart, Georgia. At the time of John's birth, it was in Paulding County. There is no real proof that John was born in Van Wert, but the town is close to where he was born.

John's birth date is recorded in the Family Bible Record Page owned by MinEra Collins, passed on to Nancy S. Shire in 1978.

In District 950 of Paulding County at the time of the 1850 census, the following related families were living:

1) Hosea Camp age 75 with wife Elizabeth age 72, household #540. Hosea was a Methodist preacher; he was deeded the land that John Brooks Sr. lived on in 1849-50. This piece of land and part of the original brick house built by Micajah Brooks is known as the Everette Plantation.

2) John C. Rasbury age 41 with wife Delaney (Brooks) age 35, household #541, with six children. (She was John L. Brooks' older sister.)

3) Household #126 was that of John L. Brooks' grandfather, Micajah Brooks, age 88, with wife Margaret age 42 and two sons, Carter age 7 and Green L. age 5.

John L. Brooks and Jane Adair Brooks traveled from Georgia with other family members to Upshur County, Texas around 1849-50. Their first three children were born in Paulding County, Georgia. The fourth, Andrew Brooks, was born in Mississippi on the way to Texas in May of 1849. They probably stayed in Mississippi several months to grow a crop of grain to feed their large numbers of cattle, sheep, and horses. It is not known where they were at the time of the 1850 census; they may have still been in Mississippi.

The family was enumerated in the 1860 U.S. Census for Upshur County, Texas, page 19, Household Number 138, Family Number 129. The children listed were James, age 16 (James Madison); Annie, age 14 (Henrietta Ann); Andrew, age 11; Mary, age 9 (Mary Ellen); William, age 5 (William Albert); John, age 3
(John Milton); and Frances, age 4/12 (Fannie).

Some time after 1860 John L. and Jane Brooks left Upshur County. It is not known where they went at first, but they may have spent some time in Johnson County, Texas where John Brooks Sr. and wife Eliza had settled along with younger son Joseph. A John L. Brooks was listed as a taxpayer in Johnson County in 1872.

J. L. Brooks age 47, Jane Brooks age 28 (wrong! she was 33), Andrew 21 (he was only 19 or 20), Mary 15 (she was 19), Albert 13 (he was 15), John 12, Fanny 11, Thomas 8, and Maggie 5 are in the 1870 census of Precinct 3, Guadalupe County, Texas. This information was sent to me by Nell Lewis who had read the 1870 Guadalupe County Federal Census, Microfilm Image 4 of 26.

A John L. Brooks is listed as an early landowner in Denton County, Texas, so perhaps he went there for a time before moving on to the San Antonio area. In the same land records are listed his brothers, Allen Brooks and Micajah "Micager" Brooks.

Several of John L. Brooks' sons purchased farmland in Frio County, Texas after it was opened to settlement in the early 1870's.

John L. Brooks does not seem to appear anywhere in the 1900 census, despite searching for every possible combination of name and age range.

John and Jane Adair Brooks were buried in the Old Rock Baptist Church Cemetery at Somerset, Bexar County, Texas along with some of their children.

Most of the dates for the children of John L. Brooks and Jane Adair were obtained from the BrooksFamily Bible Record page in the possession of descendant Nancy Shire, given to her in 1979 by a daughter of Maggie (Magdalen) Brooks Collins, MinEra Collins. The Bible records were sent in a regular business envelope and were in pieces, some as small as 1/2 inch. Over a period of many days the pieces were assembled and taped together. Nearly all the information was salvaged except for a couple of dates that were completely worn away at the edges.

1880 Census of Frio County, Texas, HH #50/60:

Brooks, John L., age 58, Farmer, born Ga, both parents born Ga
Brooks, Jane, age 54, born GA, both parents born Ga
Brooks, J. M., age 22, Stock Raiser, born TX
Brooks, Fannie, age 19, "at home," born TX

He bought land at headwaters of Ephraim's Creek, Chatham County, North Carolina from his brother John, Jr. and built his home there, near his brother Joab.

Jeanette Darby Connally, writing a commentary on the Connally Family (this compiler does not know in what publication her commentary was published, or the date), states that Mary Elizabeth's parents were "John and Elizabeth Toller Brooks." This is the first known independent reference referring to the first wife's maiden name -- in this instance, "Toller" instead of "Toler." A daughter of Mary Elizabeth Brooks Crisp and Carroll Crisp, Buena Vista Crisp, married Commodore Perry Connally, Jr. Apparently Jeanette Darby Connally married a grandson or great-grandson of this couple.

Another Crisp descendant and researcher of the Crisp family (not related to the Brooks line at all) is Joan Reed, 7080 Reche Canyon Rd., Colton, CA 92324.

Mary Elizabeth Brooks Crisp was living with son Robert in Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, at the time of the 1900 census. By 1910 she was with her daughter Ida R. Bailey, a widow, in Hopkins County, Texas, listed as "Elizabeth M. Crisp." I could not find her in 1920.

His pension claim #W. 27649 states his place of birth and the date. He is buried in Paulding County, Georgia in a part of what is now Polk County. The Daughters of the American Revolution have erected a monument at the site.

Micajah Brooks served under Captain Few, George Barber, and Colonel Elijah Clark of Georgia. After his initial tour of duty he reenlisted in South Carolina's Edgefield District in March of 1780 or 1781; he served three months under Captains Hill, Mimms, Wilson, Bishop, Beckham, and Miller and, again, under Colonel Elijah Clark.

A copy of Micajah Brooks' pension application is in the possession of the submitter, as well as a copy of the Paulding County marriage record listing his second marriage to Margaret T. Carter in 1839.

Micajah Brooks was listed in the 1850 United States census of Paulding County, Georgia.

Both of Micajah Brooks' sons by his wife Margaret T. Carter (Carter Brooks and Green Brooks) died without issue.

Ida Brooks Kellam in "Brooks and Kindred Families" makes several references to Bibles in the possession of various descendants, and she states that Micajah Brooks' daughter had in her possession such a family Bible. This may have been Nancy Brooks Hubbard.

Some researchers list Phoebe Ann Brooks as a child of Micajah Brooks and Mary Hunter, but the evidence supporting this is slim.

Micajah Brooks was found in the 1820 census of Monticello Township, Jasper County, Georgia.

Micajah Brooks was awarded land in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery on March 20 of that year; the land was awarded as a reward for his service in the Revolutionary War. (Allen's District, #26, District #24, Muscogee
County.)

Micajah Brooks was in the 1830 census of Henry County, Georgia. He was in Paulding County by 1837, where he was enumerated in a state census certified November 6, 1837.

Micajah Brooks was in the 1850 census of Paulding County, Georgia, excerpt as follows:
Micajah Brooks, age 85 (sic), Farmer, born North Carolina
Margaret Brooks, age 42, born Georgia

Nancy BROOKS31 was born on 9 January 1799 in Jasper Co., GA.31 She died on 17 June 1874 at the age of 75 in Troup Co., GA.31 She was buried in Brooks-Hubbard Cemetery, Rockmart, Polk, GA.31 Nancy Brooks Hubbard was the first person buried in the Brooks-Hubbard cemetery in 1851, where Micajah Brooks was also buried.

According to Ida Brooks Kellam, almost all the information about the line tracing old Micajah Brooks back through John Brooks, English immigrant, came from the Woodson Hubbard family Bible; parts of the information are quoted in her book "Brooks and Kindred Familes." It would be interesting to know if this old Bible still survives and, if so, where it is located.

Suzi Motley, a descendant, states that Nancy was born 9 January 1799 at Wilkes County, Georgia and died 6 May 1851 at Polk County, Georgia. Other sources give Nancy's birthdate as 1797; one source even says 1807.
