quiet, retireing personality and handsome appearance, reminded someone of
a violet, he was promptly tagged "The Violet", very much as Richard the
Lion Hearted, Ivan the terrible and Peter The Great were named by
their contemporaries. And so it was Peirre, or Jean or Richard TOUGAS " The
Violet". In nearly all the early French civil and other records in
Vincennes the name is spelled--Tougas dit Laviolette, "dit" meaning
"called". So Joseph Tougas dit Laviolette equaled Joseph Tougas, called
Laviolette.
When the 4 TOUGAS boys came to IL, Augustine and Guillaume to Rochester


and Francios and Joseph to St. Francisville, the first two dropped the
TOUGAS. They and their descendants ever since have been called
LAVIOLLETTE. Joseph and Francios dropped the LAVIOLETTE and today their
descendants are called TOUGAS. Parents: Augustine LAVIOLETTE and Eleanore DESLORIERS.
